Proud to be who i am February 27, 2007

The following are not my own words. I think, however, that I could do no better at expressing who I am.
An Open Letter from a Witch:
I am a witch. I do not worship Satan; I am not interested in Satan. Satan was invented by the Christians. Satanism is a form of Christianity. I am not a Christian. I don’t go to church on Sunday. Jesus is NOT my savior. He was simply a holy man who lived 2,000 years ago. I am not afraid of going to Hell because I don’t believe in Hell any more than I believe in Satan. I believe in reincarnation; that I will come back to this world or another and live out another life. I am not evil. Telling people I am a “good witch” or asking me if I am a good witch implies that there are evil witches. There are evil people in the world and there are people who chose to work with the forces of nature in a way that harms others; those people are NOT witches.
The central law of being a witch is: “if it harms none, do as you will.” Please don’t ask me about sacrificing cats or desecrating churches. I love my cats! And I don’t go into churches or synagogues unless a friend from that religion invites me to some special occasion. And if I DO enter a church, I am not struck by lightning. If a Christian or a Jew or a Buddhist came to a pagan ritual, our gods would not strike them dead either. Isn’t that something to think about?
Wearing a pentacle is no different than wearing a cross, crucifix, or Star of David. If you want me to take off the symbol of MY religion (and Wicca is a religion, protected by the same First Amendment rights as other religions) because it’s offensive, you need to make everyone of every religion do that. The five points of the star signify the four elements of Earth, Air, Fire & Water, and the fifth point is Spirit; encircled by the World. How that can offend anyone boggles my little pagan mind. An image of a tortured, dying man is more offensive, yet thousands of people openly wear crucifixes every day.
Please don’t ask me if I’m in a “coven” in that half-horrified, half-fascinated tone of voice. If I want to talk about my coven, I will bring it up. If I am a solitary practitioner, I have no coven to discuss. In any case, our rituals have candles, food, drink, poetry, dancing…yes, there is a knife but it only cuts the air, not anyone’s flesh.
I don’t drink blood. I am not some kind of vampire. I wear black because it keeps negativity away and to tell the truth…it looks better on me than pink, orange and purple polka dots!
If you want to ask me something related to MY religion, ask me when the next full moon is. Or the next blue moon Or what a blue moon IS! Ask me about herbs. Crystals, Healing, Even ask me to make you a love potion.
I don’t cast spells on other people and I won’t cast a spell on you to make you prettier, thinner, more desirable. I won’t cast a spell on your quarry to make him/her love you. Trust me, you don’t want that, you don’t want the Karma that involves and neither do I! That’s a form of manipulation, taking away someone’s power, infringing on their free will. Not nice at all.
I also won’t cast a binding spell to make someone STOP doing something to you. Spell work is about co-creation. A witch works with universal energy, with the gods, to tilt the engine of probability somewhat.
Need money? Don’t try to ensorcel your boss to give you a raise. Simply ask the universe to increase the flow of abundance in your direction. That infringes on NO ONE’s free will.
Giving me a book about the Burning Times is like giving a book on The Holocaust to a Jewish person. It’s not funny and is rude!
Yes, I do go to Salem, but not because any of those poor executed people were witches(the jury is still out on some of them), but because there’s cool pagan shops there. If there were cool pagan shops in a town called East Cowflop, I’d go there as well!
Don’t try to make me ashamed of who I worship and what I am. Please don’t try to convert me or “save” me. Don’t throw holy water on me. Don’t leave little pamphlets on my desk or windshield. I don’t need to be saved.
Witches are proud of the fact that we don’t recruit people to become witches. We simply ARE and those around us see how we think, how we act and our inner peace and only when someone says “how do I become a witch?” do we take them into the fold with us.
I will NEVER leave a religious tract with anyone. I don’t have one, unless you count this letter. I am not asking you to convert. I am only asking you to pease understand. If you don’t want to understand, well then just leave me alone

Speak English February 21, 2007
Posted by Lloyd in Politics.2 comments
The Commission on Integration and Cohesion has today announced that the biggest barrier to relations is non english speaking workers and spouses. It has proposed that all non speaking migrant workers and people entering this country by marriage should be made to learn english. The report already has come under fire from barristers claiming that it is ‘impractical’ and a ‘posible infringement of an individuals human rights’. I have also heard the argument that we live in a multi cultural society and we should accept that some people do not wish to learn english.
Now i would be the first to agree that we do live in a multicultural society. I, however, fail to see how learning english would change that. I personally do not find it acceptable that people work in this country and do not have even a basic command of english. Learning english would surely help individuals to integrate into society and be able to interact with people. Not to mention that there are unscrupulous people that can and do take advantage.
I used to work as a personal injury lawyer and had a case where 4 polish workers were injured in an accident. Not one could speak english and trusted their boss to handle the claim for them. At the successful conclusion of the claim the boss demanded a 50% handling fee. I received a letter clearly written by this individual and unfortunately signed by the four workers. The upshot was that i had to pay the ‘helpful’ person a little over £ 5000 for his ‘help’. If the workers had spoken english this situation could have been avoided and would not have been ripped off.
As for the proposals being ‘impractical’ at the moment it would seem that this is the case. The current government is in fact cutting places for free english lesson for migrant workers who cannot speak english. It is also the case that one of the suggestions put forward that english should be learnt before coming to this country. This is impractical as english lessons will probably not be so freely available in their home country. This would mean ,of course, increasing the lessons available to incoming non english speaking people.
The ‘Human rights’ argument is frankly the most laughable of all of them. Nobody has forced people to come to this country to work and i therefore see no reason why english lessons should not be made compulsory. It seems simple that someone choosing to come to this county should also choose to learn english. I do not know of any cultural or religious restriction that would prevent this being the case. There may be one and if there is please enlighten me.
No one is asking for them to speak english all the time or to give up there own language. It is simply a case of learning our national language to have the ability of communication. It would be unreasonable of me to go and live in Spain, for example , without learning spanish.
We do live in a multicultural sociaty that has brought us meny benifits and additions to our culture.
So how do we pay for the english lessons ? Is it fair for the ‘tax payer’ to fund the lessons ?
Frankly i say yes it is right for the ‘tax payer’ to fund the lessons. After all legally working immigrants are ‘tax payers’. By the same token, however, I also believe that free language lessons should be available for the english speaking public.
I have no doubt that there are some people that would find this unfair. There are, however, meny situations that are with regards to taxation. That, however, is another subject.

Computer Games help you lose weight !!!! February 19, 2007

A recent study at the John Moores University in liverpool has reveiled that regulur use of consoles like the Nintendo wii can help you loose up to 27lb (12.25 kg) the BBC has reported.
Apparently research has shown that the new generation of active games that are available can have positive health benefits if used regularly. The research tested active games verses the traditional joypad played games. This has lead to the health improvement stated.
Well Drrr !
Did we really need serious scientific research to tell us that if we are up an moving as opposed to sitting on the couch we’re going to burn more calories. Yes, granted, we now know the exact amount of weight that we can loose by using the active games.
This is one research project that the world can do without. Not to mention the thousands in grant money that have probably spent on this research when there are far more important things that need to be researched and studied.
Perhaps we have a contender for this years Ig Noble prize in heath.
Still if you happen to be passing my window and happen to see me waving my arms like a loony its because i’m playing with my eyetoy. Not because i have gone stark raving mad !!!!!
I notice that Nintendo have been quick on the uptake for this. So I’m looking forward to the ‘buy a WII, its good for you’ campaign. If or when it happens get ready for a ‘told you so’ blog entry
Is this really entertainment ??? February 17, 2007

So here i am sat at home on Friday evening. It’s getting a bit late in the evening and i’m channel surfing. Now i come to rest on channel 4 (yes i know this should have warned me) and a program called Balls of Steel. Now i’ve never seen it, at to be perfectly frank never want to again. Now this is apparently its second series and the only question i have is how did it even get a first.
For those who have had the good fortune not to have seen it let me give you a rundown of the ‘comady’ highlights
First we had a Alex Zaine pretending to host a game show and deliberately winding people up by not guessing the answer.
Second was a TW*T in a cowboy had throwing fast food at people.
Third up was a Wa**er in a devil outfit locking people in portaloo’s
Forth was a fake reporter who had stupid signs on her mike interviewing Hollywood celebrity’s.
Fifth was a duo called the pain brothers and their contribution to the evening ‘helarity’ was for one of them to throw darts at the others a*se.
Sixth (and thankfully last) was a couple who had sex where ever they went.
Now is it just me, am i missing something. What exactly is funny about this !!
Maybe it is me. I prefer my entertainment to have a little more intelligence to it.
Still i will admit that there was one bit that made me chuckle. That was when the tit in the devil outfit went into a car park and painted the disabled symbol in all the spaces. The only reason that was amusing is that i’m constantly frustrated by the three hundred or so parking spaces nearest the shops being disabled. And only then because I won’t park in one unlike 90% of the people that normally are and don’t have any right to.
Friendship February 15, 2007
Posted by Lloyd in Friends, Life Choice.3 comments
I’ve been thinking lately that i appear to have lost contact with most of my friends.
Now this is partly my fault. After all i haven’t really made any effort to contact them. I believe that communication is a two way thing. So although its true that i haven’t made much effort, its also true that they haven’t either.
Still i’m digressing from the point. You see we had a get together the other day and it made me realise that i miss them. Now because of personal choice’s i cannot get to see them as much as i like. That doesn’t change the fact that one of my friends did something incredibly nice.
You see about a month ago my computer died. Motherboard just decided to pack up. Now being somewhat short on the money front i couldn’t just go and buy a new one. So i dug out an old laptop and was using that.
Now this came out at our little get together and a friend offered me a old computer that was just sat under his desk. Now when i say computer i mean motherboard, processor and case(wanted to be exact). However, after transferring all the components from my old system I now have a fully working computer again. The very same one that i’m typing this on in fact.
Now alot of people may not think much of this. But, considering, that i have only seen this friend about four times in the past two years and have made no real effort to stay in contact i feel it was an increadably nice thing for him to do.
Now i also know that i have let another friend of mine down quite badly recently. They went through a time of crisis in their lives and i gave the impression that i didn’t care. Now i have to say that there are few people in the world that i give my life for and their one of them. Still didn’t stop me acting like a complete twat and appearing to go into hiding when they needed my support.
For that I apologise, and it will not happen again (Hopefully there won’t be a need).
So whats the purpose of this entry. Its simple really, I’ve decided that i should make a bit more of an effort with my friends.
After all it takes all of about 10 seconds to type a text message, so that’s one thing i can do once in a while.
Doesn’t cost anything to give them a quick call on my mobile (have 600 mins of anytime/anynetwork calls a month). So every now and then i’m gonna call them, just to see how they are.
Now the above might not seem like much, however, i know when i get a call from someone i haven’t heard from in a while it makes me smile. It is after all nice to know that people are thinking about you.
Well that’s all i’ve got to say on the matter really
PS. It wouldn’t hurt if my friends did the same every now and then
I am the anti-christ, apparently ! February 13, 2007

Yes the above appears to be true.
You see I was accosted outside my local shop, by what appeared to be a small obese, dirty troll with two filthy overweight trollettes, after buying some tobacco and rolling myself a cigarette and, heaven forbid, lighting it..
Now don’t get me wrong the issue here is not the size of the troll, or her (I assume) personal hygiene (or lack thereof). It is the fact that there I was minding my own business when she felt it necessary to impart her views like some fishwife at the top of her lungs. This is what the, thankfully short, conversation went like this.
‘I think people like you are disgusting’
‘Pardon’
‘You heard, you pollute our air not caring who you hurt’
‘What’
‘You’d be the first to run to the NHS for treatment if you got cancer. I don’t think that you should be treated; it’s your own fault anyway. Your evil.’
Then the troll walked into the shop leaving me rather bewildered by incident, but, still smoking my cigarette. I walked to my car. Got in and drove home. Thinking about this on the way home.
Now I’m a smoker as should be obvious by now. You can tell me it’s a disgusting habit and I would agree with you. I agree that smoking in confined spaces is not good for non smokers and agree that it should be banned in public places. Yes it’s a stupid thing to do and yes there are grave health risks. But it doesn’t matter how much you tell me that there’s one simple fact. It’s my choice to smoke or not. Last time I checked I was still living in a free country.
So having a bit too much time on my hands I did a bit of research on smoking and here’s some facts.
1. Smoking related disease costs the NHS between 3 and 4 billion a year.
2. Estimates say that between 27-35 % of the adult population smoke.
3. The Population of Britain is aprox 60 million.
4. The average duty paid on a packet of cigarettes is £ 3.57.
5. The average smoker smokes 20-25 a day.
Now you may be wondering where I’m going with this so keep with me and I’ll tell you.
Let us assume that 1/3 of the population are not adult leaving 40 million adults. Let us pick 30% as the figure of smokers. That means there are 12 million smokers.
Let us also assume that only one packet is smoked per smoker per day. No that works out to £ 24.99 a week, about £ 107.48 a month and £ 1,303.05 a year. So per smoker the treasury gets £ 1,303.05 per smoker per year (using the duty above).
So assuming that the above is correct for one smoker, what about 12 million of them???
The answer is a staggering £ 15,636,600,000 extra in the treasury due to smokers alone.
So yes, smoking does cost the treasury about 3 – 4 Billion per year and is rising. At the moment, however, it would appear that smokers are still some £ 11,000,000,000 in credit.
Still that’s not the point is it? The point is obviously that smoking is bad and everyone should give up.
Hang on though!!!
The treasury is getting 11 billion and you can bet that it’s being spent on something. So if every smoker gave up at once. Every adult would have to pay an extra £ 275 in tax. A small price to pay.
Still the small squat troll may have been right. After all who but a troll can tell me if I’m the anti-Christ or not J
In truth i’m not partically pro or anti smoking. But if i choose to stand on top of a hill wearing copper armour shouting at the top of my lungs that all gods are bast**d thats my concern. The same goes for me smoking.
A Cure for Cancer ???? February 11, 2007
Posted by Lloyd in Science.2 comments
Now I’m not a scientist and I don’t hold any advanced degrees. I do, however, read new scientist whenever I can. Now while reading it I came across a couple of articles on a drug called Dichloroacetate (DCA for short). Now it would appear from lab tests that this shows huge potential as an anti cancer drug. Unfortunately it may never see the light of day for one very simple reason. It’s an old drug and therefore unpatentable.
Now I’m going to bore you a bit with how DCA works.
In the 1930 there were two scientists who theorised on the cause of cancer. Otto Warburg stated that cells turn cancerous by changing the way that cells generate energy. In normal, healthy cells, this is done through the mitochondria to generate their energy (think back to your science classes at school). Cancerous cells switch to a process called glycolysis. In this process the cell begins to produce energy in the main body of the cell. This process normally happens when oxygen is in short supply.
Warburg found that cancer cells continue to use glycolysis even when oxygen is in plentiful supply. This is known as Warburg effect and he argued that this was the defining property and cause of cancerous cells.
This idea was never taken up because of the work of another scientist called Hans Krebs. He argued that the Warburg effect was a symptom of cancer and not the defining element. He believed that cells only transferred to glycolysis because there mitochondria fail or become irrevocably damaged. Kerbs theories have therefore become the basis of cancer research for over 70 years. Scientist have believed that it is mutation in a cell that causes it to be cancerous and not (as in Warburg’s model) because of metabolism.
Now at this point I want to say that the mitochondria appear to have a duel purpose in cells. It is in effect the power plant of the cell. It is also responsible for telling a cell when to die.
I would like to examine the two theories above using the scientific precept that all things being equal the simplest explanation is normally the truth. Which is more likely?
1. A cell starved of oxygen turns off its own mitochondria and switches to glycolysis in an effort to survive.
2. An unknown force or substance causes a cell to mutate and in the process damaging the mitochondria.
I believe that the first is more likely. Now it is an unfortunate side effect of the cell wanting to survive that causes it to become cancerous. A side effect of the mitochondria being turned off is the cell is now ‘immortal’ and when it multiplies its child cell also use glycolysis and the cancer grows. It can also explain why cancer can spread so readily. Glycolysis burns sugar rather than oxygen and as a by product produces lactic acid. The lactic acid can break down the cellulose membrane that holds cells together and the now cancerous cell can spread to unaffected parts of the body.
Now DCA is used in the treatment of rare mitochondrial and metabolic disease. It has the effect of boosting a cells ability to burn oxygen. In test carried out in the University of Alberta it would also appear that it can effectively turn on the mitochondria in cancerous cells. This would therefore seem to prove that the metabolism argument is correct. The mitochondria cannot be irrevocably damage because it now appears to be working. As a result the cancerous cells loose their ‘immortality’ and die, the mitochondria now telling the cell its time to die.
Lab test have proven that DCA can kill lung, breast and brain cancer. As all forms of cancer appear to display the ‘Warburg effect’ there seems no reason why it would not work on all forms. It also appears to have no effect on healthy cells. DCA is a proven drug and is already used in certain treatments. We already know its side effects. There is, however, one problem. It has never been used in clinical trials to treat cancer. That is the rub and the purpose of this rant.
Despite the fact that in lab test it shows huge potential to treat cancer no drug company seems willing to take it to clinical trials. The reason for this is that it is an old drug and therefore no patent would be granted.
So it would seem that because they can’t make a fortune out of it they won’t bother. They would rather spend billions a year researching new drugs which that can patent and sell for obscene amounts of money.
DCA is easy and cheap to produce. DCA is in fact a bi product of water chlorination. Now there are concerns of the use of DCA. Previous research shows that it can, ironically, be carcinogenic. There are, however, cancer treatments today that are carcinogenic so this is not a major issue.
After all if you were a terminal cancer patient what would you choose?
1. We have a drug that may cure you completely, but, stands a slight chance of causing more cancer.
2. Death
Frankly I know which I’d choose.
I find it totally obscene and abhorrent that this potential cure is being overlooked purely because of money.
I know no-one that hasn’t been affected by this disease in some way. I’ve seen my cousin’s wife degenerate from a health and vibrant person to a shell of a person hardly able to get out of bed and constantly in pain before, thankfully, she died. I’ve had a friend who has had to live for a time with the knowledge of cancer (thankfully now it appears to have gone away). My own brother has had skin cancer. Cancer not only affects the sufferer but all around them.
Frankly if anything show potential to finally remove this disease its worth investigating.
Any drug company that refuses to investigate should be shut down and their board should be put on trial for crimes against humanity. Once more it seems that the worst part of our humanity appears hold sway. And all because the CEO’s and directors of these companies want a flash new car!!!! Still as long as the share holders are happy !!!!
PC or MAC February 10, 2007
Posted by Lloyd in Computers.18 comments
Now i know this is an old argument and it will never be settled. There are definatly two camps and never the twain shall meet.
Unlike most windows based pc users i have accually had some experiance with a mac. To be honest it was a fairly good. Very easy to use and simple.
I still wouldn’t buy one though.
Now i think that its only fair to say that I’m a huge fans of apple products. The ipod is frankly a masterpeice. The new iphone looks great and if it has the full features when it gets to this country (i live in england) would change the game considerably. The mac looks good, however, its never sold me.
Now i’ve seen the new mac is better than pc adverts and although i found them quite amusing would like to raise afew points. After all has apple really got that desperate
First the virus issue. Yes i would conceed that there may well have been 114,000 viruses on the pc last year that would not have affected the mac. But heres the important question, why is that ?
Now the answer to that is very simple. There are simply more users of the pc than the mac. I can think of no office i’ve ever worked in that has used mac. The only exeption to this i know of is graphic designers and even then the admin side is normally taken care of by a windows pc. For that matter, everyone i’ve ever know has had a windows based pc. At the end of the day if your the sort of person who would write a virus you’d want it to go where it would do the most damage, not mac systems then
Point two, Pc have to constently restart.
Well yes i will concede that pc do have to restart when i have installed something important like a virus checker. They do not, however, have to restart whenever i change applications as the advert would appear to imply. If i install a game i can play it straight away. Photo editing software, again, can use it straigt away, no restart needed.
Point three, macs are more fun. Now all i’m going to ask is this. Has anyone at apple acually used a windows based pc ? Lets face it the hot topic in gaming world is ps3 or xbox 360. Both are capable of going online and you can play with anyone around the world who has the same game. Frankly PC users have been able to do this for years. Now it is true that windows has seen some good ideas in the mac os and taken them, the reverse is also true.
They are not frankly just for busisness. Look at the variaty of software that comes out every week for a pc then compare it to the mac. Walk into any software shop an try to find mac software. I know of only two shops you can buy mac software: Apple stores and pc world.
Now i would also concede that the sales of the mac have gone up in the last six months or so. Now it could be a coincidance but haven’t apple started putting intel chips in there macs so that you can run windows instead of mac osx in the last six months or so.
How easy is it to upgrade a pc. Want a new graphics card ? rip the old one out and put the new one in, load the software there you go. Want to upgrade your memory, just bung some more in. A mac, don’t even think upgrading is possible.
Now i know that mac users will always think that pc users are idiots and vice versa. Still doesn’t change the fact that pc users are right in this assumption and that mac users are wrong
